Since 1908 the butchers in Burley has existed on our very same site, serving the tight-knit local community with local meat and fresh fruit and veg from surrounding farms. The business was initially owned by the Pratts, before changing hands in 1924 and becoming F Moorman & Son. The Moorman family ran the butchers for three generations until Nick Hill took over from Charles Moorman as head butcher in July 2017.

2017 marked a new chapter for the village stores as Burley residents Nigel and Charlotte took over the butchers and post office, and the Shappen brand was born. The new name originates from a part of Burley called ‘Shappen Bottom’ where there used to be a Shappen Nursery selling fruit and vegetables as well as a Shappen Farm.

Today the store has all the charm of a family-run business with hand-picked products and care and attention given to every detail. A central hub of the community, the shop is planned with local residents in mind, as well as providing visiting tourists with a taster of the incredible food and drink the New Forest has to offer. In 2020, www.newforeststores.com was launched to allow a bespoke delivery service of Shappen’s hand-picked meat, deli and drinks, wherever you are in the country.
